The Dalton Highway, Alaska - The Dalton, known as the "haul road", is 414 miles of rough gravel and dirt road (with an occasional stretch of pavement) that was built to supply the construction of the Alaska oil pipeline from the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay to the shipping terminal in Valdez. The Dalton runs along the upper half of the pipeline from north of Fairbanks to the edge of the Arctic Ocean on the North Slope. It's the farthest north you can drive on continuous road in North America.
